Who is Rio de la Cruz? The Man behind the Afro
Those who have had the pleasure of knowing Coach Rio De La Cruz personally, or have heard even just bits and pieces of his rags-to-riches life story, will agree that the high-speed roadrunner, running coach extraordinaire, and running events maestro has come a very long way – literally and figuratively. From his humble beginnings as a native of Bato, Camarines Sur, he is the youngest of 14 children – 7 of which are his full-blooded siblings while the rest are half-siblings. At nine-months old, his biological mother left them and it was his biological father who raised their whole brood while they lived with his grandfather in Bicol. Innocence is bliss and despite the hardships that surrounded him and his family, he still found joy in childhood games where he had his first encounter with the sport that has made a great impact in his life: running.

What is Sofitel Manila Half Marathon
The Sofitel Manila Half Marathon aims to be at par with other international marathons such as the Boston Marathon or Singapore Marathon. The greater aim of the event is to contribute to the upliftment of the lives of the street children of Manila through Virlanie Foundation, the beneficiary of the marathon. In 2013, Sofitel Philippine Plaza has raised over Php 1. 5 million through the two runs organized, Sofitel Battle of the Sexes Leg 1 and 2 – a part of the proceeds had been used to purchase a van that was handed over to the foundation for their activities. This year, the target is to attract over 6,000 runners and better success in terms of fund raising. Since 2007, the hotel has launched several projects to help raise funds to support the foundation’s benevolent activities in order to reach out to the children and families living in the poorest areas of Metro Manila.

New Schedule of the Battle of the Sexes Race

Sharing with you the official announcement from the organizer of Battle of the Sexes regarding its postponement and rescheduling to a later date which is March 3, 2013. Incidentally, a 5km race category will be added in the staging of the said event. Registration fee for 5km is Php500. More details to follow once available and will be posted here about this 5k race category:

Dear Runners,

It is with deep regret that we have to announce that the Battle of the Sexes race event which was originally scheduled to happen on Saturday, January 26, 2013 as a night-time race, is postponed.

Despite being able to acquire approval/permits from the SM Mall of Asia and Pasay City authorities, we will be unable to organize a night-time scheduled race because we were not granted approval by the Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA) who has jurisdiction on vital portions of the Battle of the Sexes race route.

Citing safety and security concerns, the PRA have declined to provide approval on the use of the road under their authority/jurisdiction on a Saturday night race.

With this being the case, RunRio in partnership with Hotel Sofitel will need to reschedule and redesign the said race as a Sunday-morning event, thus the need for postponement.

The new schedule of the Battle of the Sexes race will be on Sunday, March 3 at 5:30AM.

In line with the postponement, registration period will be extended until February 17 for Online Registration and until February 24 for In-Store Registration.

Runners who have already registered for this event need not worry since their registration will still be valid for use on the same event. For further concerns, you may send us an email via feedback@runrio.com with the subject “Battle of the Sexes” or call us in any of the following RunRio hotlines:

Globe – 0927 347 7700

Smart – 0929 717 8164

Landline – (632) 703-1736

Our apologies for this inconvenience and we look forward to seeing you at the rescheduled Battle of the Sexes event!

Sincerely yours,

The RunRio Team

Battle of the Sexes – Defend Your Gender Race Event

A new race event was conceptualized by Coach Rio dela Cruz that will take place on January 26, 2013 at the SM MOA grounds in Pasay City. Ladies, how about  racing against the gentlemen 7 to 10 minutes ahead of time? See if you can now beat the opposite sex competitors. We know for a fact that both sexes have different physical and physiological characteristics that make opposite sexes unique. Based on the race organizer’s data records, with respect to age category, the average lady finishers cross the finish line 7 to 10 minutes behind men in their 10K races. Given this constant, Runrio, Inc.’s president Rio dela Cruz, decided to put that conclusion into test, for us to find out who will outrun who come this date. No more holding hands while running for those sweethearts with active lifestyle. It’s time to have fun competing with one another with this one-of-a-kind race for 2013!
