CIHM – Half The Experience, One Hundred Percent Enjoyment

The Corregidor International Half-Marathon (CIHM) race held last Saturday was a special treat for first-timer to the island like me. Though I ran (walk) the shorter distance which is 10K, the beautiful scenery, fresh air and the fun of taking pictures along the route are some of the things I really enjoyed there. If only I can run with a dslr, I have better shots of the ruins that can be found in this island fortress. I used the camera of my phone instead, so bear with the quality of photos I included in here.

Going to the island is more than an hour of ferry boat ride by Sun Cruises. Upon arrival at the pier; there are ‘tranvias’ that fetched us near the starting line. That day the weather was perfect, it was 8 o’clock in the morning with an overcast sky. Trees cover the start area up to a few dozen meters along the road and most of the length of the course. The organizers welcomed us, most especially Mr. Edward Kho, the race director and Atty. Raymund Martelino and while we waited for the gun start, the program hosts entertained the runners with their repertoire of jokes that even foreign participants had enjoyed.

The long uphill is a real challenge to those who had already experienced running in Tagaytay Midlands or Timberland in San Mateo, Rizal. If you are an obese like me :), you will feel a lot heavier running that route, making it difficult to speed up or sustain a decent pace. On the contrary, I felt pain on my right knee whenever I slowed down or try to walk downhill going to the finish line. The special treats:  cold sponges, jello, cranberry sweets, ready-to-pop bananas in the water stations and roses for lady 21k finishers, not to mention the sumptuous lunch buffet!

Damn, I guess I already injured my knee ‘coz up to now I am still labouring the pain; medicines did a little to alleviate it, aggravated by participating another race last Sunday. 🙂

CIHM 2012 – A Call to Arms

Tomorrow, November 23, 2012 is the final day for CIHM 3 registration. Hurry and go to SM Tickets to secure your slot for this much-awaited race of the year.  To see full details of the race please click here.

Runners are all laced up and ready to race in the 3rd Corregidor International Half Marathon on December 1, 2012. As the big race weekend approaches, event organizers are inviting more and more running enthusiasts to register until Friday, November 23, 2012 at 11:59pm.

Being the arena of one of the last major running events of the year, Corregidor Island is indeed mapped out and ready for the participants who will be flocking from all over the world. Runners from different countries will be coming in such as Ireland, the U.S., Australia, Japan, the Netherlands, France, Canada, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Filipino runners are also making a rally for the race. Runners from the eight key provinces that have played a major role in the Philippine Revolution will be present. These provinces are Cavite, Bulacan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Batangas, Tarlac, Laguna and Manila. Participants from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will also be coming in.

Like King Leonidas’ army in “300,” their professions will no longer distinguish the runners. While organizers see a good mix of medical practitioners, lawyers, policemen, government employees, businessmen, salesmen, journalists, actors, call center employees, advertising executives, athletes, HR practitioners, OFWs, architects, engineers, chefs, artists, tech gurus, finance experts, international relations specialists and airline executives, the CIHM 3 will provide a level playing field for everyone.

The participants are expected to arrive on the island on November 30. Though the race on December 1 will be hard, the runners will be expected to party harder. Before the race “showdown” begins, they will be treated to a delicious carbo-loading dinner courtesy of Yellow Cab and a traditional bonfire at the South Dock. And post-race, a rave party will erupt courtesy of Manila Beer and will be hosted by the inimitable tandem of DJ Chris and DJ Chloe from Mellow 94.7. Exciting prizes will also be raffled off during the party courtesy of Soleus, Yellow Cab, Sun Cruises, Igco Skim Milk and other sponsors.

The 3rd Corregidor International Half Marathon is managed and organized by Big, Big, Big, Inc. presented by Soleus and Sun Cruises, Inc., in cooperation with Yellow Cab, Manila Beer, Corregidor Foundation, Running Mate, One Sceniques, ROX, L Time Studio, Igco Skim Milk, 38 Energy Drink, and the official hydration partners Summit Mineral Water and 100Plus Sports Drink and media partners The Philippine Star, Total Fitness Magazine, Business Mirror, Kulit Runner, Takbo.ph, MultiSport Magazine, Pinoy Fitness and Mellow 94.7.

Back to the Island: All Are Set For The 3rd Corregidor International Half-Marathon

History has dealt Corregidor a rough hand. It came, carved its bloody mark and moved on, leaving pages and pages of memories of its past. But on December 1, 2012, History will make a come back as Corregidor will become the setting for another epic battle – the 3rd Corregidor International Half-Marathon.

The Corregidor International Half-Marathon aims to become one of the premiere and sought-after races in the country. Governed by the banner theme “SHOWDOWN ON THE ROCK,” this year’s event was masterfully designed to present an extremely tough course for all participants – from serious to recreational runners, to elite level athletes. Medals will not be waiting at end of a paved road. Rather, prizes will be playing “hard to get,” as runners will face all types of terrain – from grassy paths, rocky and muddy trails, dark tunnels to tricky down slopes. The course will be a challenging stretch so participants will need to dish out extra effort.

The course itself isn’t the only challenge though, the 3rd Corregidor International Half Marathon is also designed to not only pit runners against each other, but to also dare participants from the 1st and 2nd editions of Corregidor International Half-Marathon to beat their personal records. A special Conqueror’s Token awaits them at the finish line.

Co-founders, and passionate runners Edward Kho and Raymund Martelino, are both psyched for the event’s third installment. To them, the Corregidor International Half- Marathon is a realization of their dream to create what could be considered as the hardest race in the country. They hope that participants will be inspired by the rich history of the island and draw strength from courage of our forefathers during the war. To Kho and Martelino, the memorials across Corregidor will serve as reminders for participants to keep fighting their personal battles – to never stand down at the face of weakness, doubt, pain and frustration.

The 3rd Corregidor International Half-Marathon will cover a total distance of 21.0975km. It will run from the north side of the island at the Lorcha Dock, heading to the east access of the Malinta Tunnel. Runners will pass through its entire length and to head out to the tail side of island.

The first half of the race route will include the ascent to the Summit Hill with a direct view of the beachfront leading to the Japanese Memorial site en route to the half-way point at the YMCA Parade Grounds. The finish point of the race is at the South dock where finishers will encounter strong jets of West Philippine Sea breeze and waves smashing the dock’s breakwater.

Participants to the 3rd Corregidor International Half-Marathon must be at least 18 years of age and should not be more than 70 years old on the day of the race. A proof of age will be required upon registration. Exemptions to the age requirement may be given upon submission of a written proof of parental consent for applicants younger than 18 years or a physician’s certification of fitness for athletic participation for applicants beyond 70 years old. The 3rd CIHM is an international event open to all nationalities. However, foreign nationals who are not residents of the Philippines, upon finishing in the top 3 places, must present a clearance from DOLE to claim their prizes.

As for the declaration of winners, there will be Top 10 Finishers that will be declared from the Male and Female Divisions, respectively. All top 10 finishers will receive a Certificate of Achievement. The Top 3 winners from each category will receive cash prizes, certificates and trophy plates – 3rd place: P5, 000.00 and a certificate, 2nd place: P8, 000.00 and a certificate, and 1st place: P15, 000.00 and a trophy plate.

On top of the medals and cash prizes, the male and female champions will be hailed as “King and Queen of The Rock.” They will be awarded with replicas of the Corregidor International Half-Marathon trophy. Inscribed on the original trophy will be name of the first champion and the names of succeeding winners in the ensuing editions of Corregidor International Half-Marathon. This trophy will be on display in Corregidor Island under the care of Sun Cruises, Inc. Likewise, the team (with a minimum of 3 members) with the fastest cumulative finish time will be awarded with the “Team Hard Core” trophy.

In addition to 21km centerpiece, the event will feature a side event called the “10k Challenge,” for running aficionados who are yet to be familiar with the challenging terrain of Corregidor but yearn to discover and experience its distinctive scenic course. The top male and female runners in this event will be awarded with a certificate of achievement and winner’s plaque. All finishers in this race category will be awarded with a 10km Achiever Medal.

The 3rd Corregidor International Half Marathon is managed and organized by Big, Big, Big, Inc. presented by Sun Cruises, Inc. and Soleus, in cooperation with Corregidor Foundation, Runningmate, One Sceniques with the special support of Activelink, ROX, L Time Studio and media partners The Philippine Star, Mellow 94.7, Business Mirror, Kulitrunner, MultiSport Magazine, Pinoy Fitness and Total Fitness Magazine.

Corregidor International Half-Mary 2012 Full Details

Last Thursday was yet another exciting moment for bloggers attending the Corregidor International Half-Marathon press conference organized by Big, Big, Big, Inc., Sun Cruises and Soleus, as we were toured along Manila Bay with one of Sun Cruises’ ships that was converted into a conference venue. The race event which will happen on December 1, 2012, were discussed in detail by the organizers, ended with sumptuous dinner, acoustic music and a raffle.

Too bad for a few attendees who have seasickness, they got to bear two hours on board the ship, hahaha! It was also a funny experience for me to have a buffet dinner there, I have to hold on the buffet table and stand, with feet wide apart, while food is being served, and went back to my table balancing a plate and a cup on both hands, because rocking motion was felt from most of the time. :p We stayed the rest of that evening dining on the promenade deck while enjoying the night view of Manila Bay and the skyline along Roxas Boulevard. Kudos to the people behind this launch and thank you!
